Cookies Policy

Last updated: 4th April 2026

What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files that are placed on your device when you visit a website. They are widely used to make websites work, remember your preferences, and provide information to site owners about how their site is being used.

Who we are

This Cookies Policy applies to AnnotationBase, a product operated by Outcraft Studio, a design and development agency based in Bristol, United Kingdom. If you have any questions about how we use cookies, you can contact us at hello@outcraftstudio.com.

How we use cookies

We use cookies in two places — on our public-facing website at annotationbase.com, and within the AnnotationBase app when you are logged in. The types of cookies used in each are different and explained below.

Cookies on the AnnotationBase website

When you visit annotationbase.com, we use the following types of cookies:

Essential cookies

These cookies are required for the website to function correctly. They cannot be switched off. They include cookies that remember your cookie consent preference so we do not ask you every time you visit.

Analytics cookies

We use Microsoft Clarity to understand how visitors use our website. Microsoft Clarity records anonymised information about pages visited, time spent on the site, clicks, and scroll behaviour. This helps us identify areas of the site that can be improved.

Microsoft Clarity may set the following cookies:

— _clck: persists the Clarity User ID and preferences, unique to the site, attributed to the same user ID on visits to the same site. Expires after 1 year.

— _clsk: connects multiple page views by a user into a single Clarity session recording. Expires after 1 day.

— CLID: identifies the first time Clarity saw this user on any site using Clarity. Expires after 1 year.

Analytics cookies are only set with your consent via our cookie banner. You can withdraw your consent at any time by adjusting your cookie preferences through the banner on our website.

You can also opt out of Microsoft Clarity tracking directly at clarity.microsoft.com/optout.

Cookies inside the AnnotationBase app

When you are logged into your AnnotationBase account, we use essential cookies only. These are strictly necessary to provide the service and keep you securely signed in. No analytics or tracking cookies are used inside the app.

Essential cookies used in the app include:

— Session cookie: keeps you logged in during your visit. This expires when you close your browser or sign out.

— Authentication token: remembers that you have authenticated so you do not need to log in on every page. This is stored securely and expires after a set period of inactivity.

Because these cookies are strictly necessary, they do not require your consent under UK GDPR and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR).

Third-party cookies

Microsoft Clarity is the only third-party service that places cookies on our website. We do not use advertising cookies, social media tracking cookies, or any other third-party tracking tools.

For more information on how Microsoft Clarity handles data, please see their privacy policy at privacy.microsoft.com.

Managing your cookie preferences

You can control and manage cookies in several ways:

Cookie banner: When you first visit annotationbase.com, you will be shown a cookie banner where you can accept or decline analytics cookies. You can change your preferences at any time by clicking the cookie settings link in the footer of our website.

Browser settings: Most browsers allow you to refuse or delete cookies through their settings. Please note that disabling essential cookies may affect the functionality of the website or app. Here are links to cookie management guidance for common browsers:

— Google Chrome: support.google.com/chrome/answer/95647 — Mozilla Firefox: support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/cookies — Safari: support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/safari/sfri11471 — Microsoft Edge: support.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge

Changes to this policy

We may update this Cookies Policy from time to time to reflect changes in the cookies we use or for other operational, legal, or regulatory reasons. When we do, we will update the date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.

A couple of things to action alongside this:

  • Make sure your cookie banner on annotationbase.com blocks Microsoft Clarity from loading until the user accepts analytics cookies — if Clarity fires before consent, you’re technically in breach of PECR
  • Add a “Cookie settings” link in your footer so users can change their preferences after their initial choice
  • Same caveat as the other documents — worth a legal review before publishing
